See Walter Burley Griffin's grove of majestic Redwood trees. Take the self-guided tour along the three kilometre walking track or just relax and enjoy a picnic. The redwoods were planted against the advice of Canberra's Arborist, Thomas Charles Weston. Only 3,000 of the original 122,000 planted survived. Despite this, the forest holds the important title of Australia's largest stand of mature Redwood species. The Pialligo Redwood Forest is registered on the Commonwealth Heritage List. In order to protect the Redwoods' shallow root systems, bicycles are not allowed in the forest. Dogs on leads allowed. ...

Such a strange place. Good: Bird sounds. Rabbits. Majestic trees. Planted 1918. Sign says only redwood plantation in southern hemisphere.* Bad: near constant howl of nearby plane takeoff so loud you can hear nothing else. Weird: no one ever seems to be here and this whole area is managed by the Department of Defence. * (Incidentally the sign says only and largest plantain in the southern hemisphere, isn't the ONLY always the LARGEST? And the smallest too?)

Nice grove of redwoods just down from the airport. Small, but quiet and out of the way.

Not many people know about or visit the Pialligo Redwood Forest. It is, however, very close to Canberra, located near the airport along the road to Queanbeyan. The forest was planted in 1918 by Canberra's designer, Walter Burley Griffin, and by Canberra's chief arborist at that time, Thomas Charles Weston. The Pialligo Redwood Forest is a good place for a picnic with your kids or for walking your dog. Although the trees are now almost 100 years old, Canberra's dry climate has prevented them from reaching the enormous size that they obtain in their native California. The forest includes specimens of California coastal redwood as well as the giant sequoia, which is native to the drier Sierra Nevada Mountains. The California Redwood grove located near Apollo Bay, Victoria, along Binns Road near Hopetoun Falls, is in many ways more impressive because it is located along a mountain stream in a high rainfall area that has permitted those trees to grow bigger, faster.
